Braking Techniques for Enduro (Front vs Rear Mastery)

EnduroSchool Admin April 1, 2026 1 min read

Braking is one of the most misunderstood skills in enduro.

Most riders either:
👉 Overuse the rear brake
👉 Or are afraid of the front brake

The truth?

👉 Mastering both is what gives you control.

The Role of Each Brake

Front brake = stopping power

  • Responsible for most of your braking

  • Essential for control on descents

Rear brake = stability & control

  • Helps you balance the bike

  • Useful in slippery conditions

Common Mistakes

❌ Only using rear brake
❌ Grabbing front brake suddenly
❌ Braking while stiff and tense

How to Brake Properly

  1. Brake before the obstacle—not in it

  2. Use both brakes together

  3. Stay loose on the bike

  4. Shift weight depending on terrain

Drill

👉 Practice controlled stops on gravel
👉 Gradually increase speed
👉 Focus on smooth braking—not aggressive
